Botox Cosmetic

Dynamic wrinkles are caused by contracting the muscles we use for facial expression – delicate facial muscles that we use every time we smile, frown, grimace or worry. We know these active wrinkles as “frown lines”, “worry lines” or “crow’s feet” and their appearance tends to increase and deepen as we age.

Botox Cosmetic is a drug approved to dramatically soften dynamic wrinkles by blocking impulses from nerves (it is NOT for wrinkles due to aging skin, sun damage or sagging tissue). In a procedure known as cosmetic denervation, Botox is injected very precisely in very tiny amounts into the facial muscles causing the lines. There is minimal discomfort associated with the injections and no sedation or local anesthesia is required. Normal activities can be resumed immediately and you may drive yourself both to and from the treatment. Several days after treatment of affected areas the overlying skin will smooth and wrinkles will disappear or soften. Because most areas are not treated, facial muscles can still contract allowing normal facial expression.

Side effects can occur with the use of Botox, but they are usually minimal. Bruising at the site of injection is the most common, is temporary and can be covered with make-up. Sometimes the Botox can migrate and cause temporary weakness of nearby muscles, rarely causing drooping of an eyelid or asymmetry of facial expressions. Because all effects of Botox are completely reversible, any side effects are also temporary.

The effects of Botox injections usually last from 3 to 6 months and then injections must be repeated for continued efficacy. Early clinical studies indicated that the duration of treatment benefits increases over time, so injections may be required less frequently as time goes by.

If dynamic wrinkles are making you look upset when you’re not or older than you are, Botox Cosmetic might be for you.
